Healthy Mouth Means Healthy Body: Myths and The Truth.
MYTH
"My parents lost all their teeth. Bad teeth runs in my family!"
THE HONEST TRUTH
Bad teeth can be genetic just like heart attacks, stroke and other systemic diseases HOWEVER, you can change this predisposition!
How can you change your outcome for disease and especially tooth loss?
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: A healthy mouth leads to a healthier, longer life!
Here are a few tips to consider:
Take these tips into serious consideration to improve your life in many ways.
- Brush twice daily.
Yes, brush after you eat breakfast and before you go to bed.
The most important time to brush is before bed because while you sleep everything in your body slows down, including saliva flow. Saliva helps to keep a healthy oral environment.

- Floss your teeth once a day.
“Only floss the teeth you want to keep.”
Brushing your teeth cleans 60% of your teeth. The in-between your teeth spaces need to be cleaned and that’s where dental floss comes in.
I prefer flossing at night and I recommend you floss each night.
You want to sleep with your mouth as clean as possible while you sleep.
While you are asleep the organs of your body slow down. One of these is production of saliva. Normal saliva flow is a good thing for lubricating your oral tissues, teeth and gums.
If plaque remains on your teeth while you sleep cavities and gum disease the plaque is like a termite that loves to eat wood. Only difference is the plaque left behind at night does a lot of damage to your teeth and gums.
You must floss in-between your teeth to prevent cavities and most importantly, gum disease. Gum disease is the Number 1 reason why people lose their teeth.
- Zen.
Practice relaxation. Stress is a big reason why you will have gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss.
4. Systemic diseases.
Inflammation in your mouth causes other systemic diseases such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis and even Alzheimer’s. Even obesity plays a key role in systemic diseases and oral inflammation, etc.
Much research has been completed about the above listed diseases and the inflammatory cells in these diseases are the same inflammatory cells in gum disease.
Year after year of bleeding gums, is like a cascade of water only image the water is the inflammatory cells that cause these systemic diseases.
These diseases will not happen overnight if you have bleeding gums but year after year of bleeding gums does eventually lead to one or many of the above listed diseases or more. not mentioned above.
5. Tobacco Use (Vaping, chewing, etc, etc) is the Number 1 RISK FACTOR for gum disease and systemic diseases.
6. Routine Dental Appointments
See your dentist and dental hygienist routinely. These are the #1 oral preventive care specialists.
We don't know which came 1st oral disease or systemic disease so always seek the advise of your dental hygienist and dentist to keep your teeth and gums healthy!
What happens in your mouth, at some point in your life, happens in your body. Refer above to Numbers 1 and 2 and keep a healthy mouth.
